What Is The Science Behind Climate Change?

In this post-truth/post-fact world, it’s hard to know who and what to believe. Flat earthers, anti-vaxxers, climate deniers, and others have been undermining the public’s trust in science. Events and concepts with clear, long-held evidence and science to support them are being called into question. One particular scientific theory that has become contentious along partisan political divides, is climate change.

What Is Climate Change?

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts can be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas.

What Is The Greenhouse Effect?

The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth. When sunlight reaches Earth, some radiation is reflected back into space, while the rest is absorbed by the planet’s surface, warming it. Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, and water vapor, act like a blanket, trapping some of this emitted heat. This heat containment helps maintain a temperature suitable for life on Earth.

How Does Burning Fossil Fuels Affect Earth’s Atmosphere?

When fossil fuels are burned, they release massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Since the Industrial Revolution, we have dramatically increased our use of fossil fuels, quickly increasing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. This excess CO2 acts like an extra blanket, preventing radiation from escaping and causing the planet to warm at an unprecedented rate. Essentially, the combustion of fossil fuels disrupts the natural balance of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to a significant increase in global temperatures and the associated impacts of climate change.

How Do We Know The Earth Is Warming?

We know the Earth is warming through a combination of observations and scientific measurements.

Thousands of weather stations worldwide have been recording temperatures for over a century. These records consistently show a significant increase in global average temperatures. Independent analyses by different scientific organizations (like NASA and NOAA) all confirm this warming trend.

The polar ice caps and glaciers, dating back thousands to millions of years, are melting at an alarming rate. Arctic and Antarctic Sea ice is diminishing significantly in both extent and thickness. Sea levels are rising due to the melting of glaciers and ice sheets, as well as the expansion of water as it warms.

Scientists have measured temperature changes over time using ice core samples. Tiny air bubbles get trapped as snow accumulates and compresses into ice. These bubbles preserve the composition of the atmosphere at the time the snow fell. Ice cores, extracted from polar regions, contain water molecules with different isotopes of oxygen (like Oxygen-16 and Oxygen-18). The ratio of these isotopes in the ice reflects the temperature when the snow fell. Like reading tree rings, ice core samples provide scientists with a recording of temperatures dating back thousands of years.

These lines of evidence, taken together, provide strong and compelling proof that the Earth is warming at an unprecedented rate due to human activities.

How Can Humans Address Climate Change?

Combating climate change requires a multifaceted approach. Transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar and wind power is crucial, along with improving energy efficiency in homes and industries. Sustainable transportation options, such as public transport, cycling, and electric vehicles, are essential. Protecting and restoring forests, adopting sustainable agricultural practices, and developing carbon capture technologies are also vital. International cooperation and individual actions, such as reducing energy consumption and supporting sustainable businesses, are crucial for mitigating the impacts of climate change.
